Knowledge itself was the scarce resource.

The internet arrived.
Suddenly, knowledge no longer lived exclusively inside libraries, universities or the minds of specialists.
It became searchable.
Accessible.
Portable.
A teenager with a smartphone could access more information in a few minutes than many of history's greatest thinkers could gather in a lifetime.
It was one of the most democratising moments civilisation had ever experienced.
The barriers to information largely disappeared.
That was an extraordinary achievement.
But abundance changes value.
Economics has always followed a remarkably simple principle.
Scarcity creates value.
Air is essential.
Yet because it is abundant, we rarely think about it.
Diamonds are comparatively useless.
Yet because they are scarce, people pay fortunes for them.
The same principle applies far beyond economics.
Whenever something becomes abundant, its value changes.
Not because it has become less useful.
Because it is no longer difficult to obtain.
The internet did not make information less useful.
It made information less scarce.
Artificial intelligence is accelerating that shift even further.
Today, a question that once required hours of research can often be answered in seconds.
Reports can be summarised.
Ideas generated.
Emails drafted.
Code written.
Images created.
Entire business plans produced before the coffee has gone cold.
The technology is astonishing.
And like every major technological leap before it, it will improve countless aspects of human life.
But every leap forward changes something else.
It changes what becomes valuable.
When photography first became widely available, many believed professional photographers would disappear.
After all, everyone now owned a camera.
Instead, something different happened.
Taking photographs became commonplace.
Creating extraordinary photographs remained rare.
The camera became accessible to everyone.
Seeing what was worth photographing did not.
Artificial intelligence may do something remarkably similar for thinking.
Producing words is becoming easy.
Producing original insight is not.
The technology democratises the tool.
It does not democratise judgement.
This is where many discussions about artificial intelligence miss the point.
People often ask:
"Will AI replace human thinking?"
Perhaps the more interesting question is:
"Which kinds of human thinking become more valuable precisely because AI exists?"
History suggests the answer is rarely none.
When calculators became commonplace, mathematicians did not disappear.
When spreadsheets arrived, accountants did not vanish.
When search engines emerged, researchers remained essential.
The routine parts changed.
The higher-order thinking became even more important.
Technology has always had a curious habit of increasing the value of whatever it cannot easily automate.
Previous essays in this series argued that attention is under attack.
That boredom is disappearing.
That conversation is becoming shallower.
That convenience is removing cognitive effort.
Viewed separately, these appear to be different problems.
Viewed together, they describe something much larger.
They describe an environment in which sustained thought is becoming increasingly uncommon.
Not impossible.
Uncommon.
And scarcity changes value.
Deep thinking is not simply intelligence.
The two are often confused.
Intelligence helps people process information quickly.
Deep thinking is something else.
It is the willingness to remain with complexity long after simpler answers have become available.
To tolerate uncertainty.
To resist premature conclusions.
To continue asking better questions after everyone else has settled for adequate ones.
Some of the brightest people in history were not necessarily the fastest thinkers.
They were often the most patient.
Modern environments rarely reward patience.
They reward responsiveness.
Reply quickly.
Publish quickly.
React quickly.
Move on quickly.
Entire industries now compete to reduce the time between stimulus and response.
Faster deliveries.
Faster downloads.
Faster decisions.
Faster communication.
Speed has become synonymous with progress.
Often, it genuinely is.
But not every problem improves when approached more quickly.
Some problems become visible only after prolonged reflection.
Think about the questions that genuinely shape a human life.
Who should I marry?
How should I raise my children?
What kind of leader do I want to become?
Which principles should govern my decisions?
What does success actually mean?
How should society use artificial intelligence?
These are not questions that reward immediate answers.
In fact, immediate certainty is often a warning sign that the question has not been considered deeply enough.
The most important questions in life are rarely solved by speed.
They are explored through sustained thought.
Perhaps that is why some of history's greatest breakthroughs appear almost invisible while they are happening.
From the outside, deep thinking looks remarkably unproductive.
Someone sits quietly.
Walks slowly.
Stares out of a window.
Crosses out pages.
Changes their mind.
Returns to the same question repeatedly.
Nothing obvious appears to be happening.
Yet beneath the surface, connections are forming that would never emerge under constant interruption.
Insight is rarely dramatic.
More often, it is the reward for staying with a difficult problem long after everyone else has become distracted.
This creates an extraordinary opportunity.
If sustained thinking is becoming rarer...
If distraction is becoming normal...
If convenience increasingly removes cognitive effort...
If artificial intelligence makes average thinking almost effortless...
Then the ability to think deeply becomes progressively more valuable with every passing year.
Not because it is fashionable.
Because it is becoming scarce.
And civilisation has always rewarded scarcity.
Perhaps we are entering an era in which the greatest competitive advantage is not knowing more than everyone else.
It is being able to remain with a difficult question for longer than everyone else.
Because while information may now be almost limitless...
The capacity to transform information into genuine insight remains profoundly human.
And it may soon become one of the rarest resources of all.
PART II — THE WORLD IS OPTIMISED FOR SHALLOW THINKING
If deep thinking is becoming increasingly valuable, why does it feel increasingly difficult?
The answer is unlikely to be a lack of intelligence.
Human beings have not suddenly become less capable.
If anything, we have access to more knowledge, more tools and more educational opportunities than any generation before us.
The challenge lies elsewhere.
The environment has changed.
And environments shape behaviour.
Imagine trying to grow an oak tree in six inches of soil.
The seed is healthy.
The sunlight is abundant.
The rain falls regularly.
Yet the roots never have enough depth to develop properly.
The limitation is not the tree.
It is the environment surrounding it.
Thinking works in much the same way.
Ideas need time.
Questions need space.
Understanding needs uninterrupted attention.
Remove those conditions and even highly intelligent people begin producing shallower thinking.
Not because they lack ability.
Because depth has nowhere to grow.
One of the defining characteristics of the modern world is that it relentlessly competes with depth.
Not intentionally.
Commercially.
Most digital platforms succeed by increasing engagement.
The longer people remain active, the more advertisements they see, the more data is generated and the more profitable the platform becomes.
Within that model, attention is not merely desirable.
It is the product.
Every notification.
Every recommendation.
Every autoplay feature.
Every endless feed.
Every personalised headline.
Competes, however briefly, with whatever you were thinking about beforehand.
One interruption rarely matters.
Thousands eventually do.
This is where distraction becomes more than an inconvenience.
It becomes cognitive fragmentation.
Every interruption asks the brain to perform a subtle but expensive task.
Stop.
Reorient.
Remember where you were.
Reconstruct the context.
Resume.
Psychologists describe this as attention residue.
Part of the mind remains attached to the previous task even after switching to the next.
The consequence is rarely obvious.
You continue working.
You continue reading.
You continue writing.
But some portion of your cognitive capacity remains elsewhere.
The cost is paid not in seconds, but in quality.
Deep thinking depends upon accumulation.
A difficult idea rarely becomes clear in the first five minutes.
Or the first twenty.
Understanding develops layer by layer.
One insight reveals another.
One question uncovers a deeper question beneath it.
Connections slowly begin appearing between ideas that initially seemed unrelated.
This process cannot easily be rushed.
Nor can it be repeatedly restarted.
Each interruption forces the mind back towards the surface.
Imagine trying to dive to the bottom of a lake while someone continually pulls you back to the surface every thirty seconds.
Eventually, you stop attempting to reach the bottom at all.
This may explain why so many people today report feeling mentally busy yet intellectually unfulfilled.
They consume enormous amounts of information.
Articles.
Podcasts.
Videos.
Newsletters.
Posts.
Books.
Courses.
Their minds remain active from morning until night.
Yet activity and depth are not the same thing.
It is entirely possible to spend twelve hours engaging with information without giving any single idea enough uninterrupted attention to transform your understanding.
Consumption creates familiarity.
Reflection creates insight.
Modern life increasingly favours the first.
Artificial intelligence introduces another fascinating dimension.
Its greatest strength is speed.
It can retrieve.
Summarise.
Organise.
Draft.
Translate.
Generate.
These capabilities will save extraordinary amounts of time.
Used well, they may become one of the greatest productivity tools humanity has ever created.
But there is a subtle danger hidden inside every efficiency.
The temptation to stop thinking the moment a plausible answer appears.
Deep thinkers have always possessed an unusual habit.
They distrust the first answer.
Not because it is necessarily wrong.
Because first answers are often incomplete.
Scientists understand this instinctively.
The first hypothesis is tested.
Not accepted.
Writers revise.
Engineers prototype.
Architects redraw.
Mathematicians check proofs.
Entrepreneurs iterate.
History's greatest breakthroughs rarely emerged from someone's first attempt.
They emerged because someone remained with the problem after the obvious solution had already appeared.
Artificial intelligence can produce impressive first drafts.
It cannot decide whether the fourth draft contains the better idea.
That judgement remains deeply human.
This distinction may become increasingly important.
As routine cognitive work becomes automated, the value of original judgement rises.
Not knowledge.
Judgement.
Knowing which questions matter.
Recognising hidden assumptions.
Seeing connections others overlook.
Understanding context.
Identifying unintended consequences.
These abilities cannot simply be retrieved from a database.
They emerge through sustained engagement with complexity.
In other words, through deep thinking.
There is another misconception worth challenging.
People often imagine deep thinkers as naturally gifted.
History suggests something rather different.
Charles Darwin walked for hours every day.
Albert Einstein described long periods of quiet reflection.
Many great writers developed strict routines that protected uninterrupted thought.
Philosophers sought solitude.
Scientists kept notebooks full of unfinished questions.
Their advantage was not necessarily superior intelligence.
It was that they repeatedly created conditions in which deep thinking could occur.
They defended their attention because they understood what attention produced.
This should feel encouraging rather than intimidating.
Deep thinking is not reserved for geniuses.
It is largely environmental.
It grows wherever people consistently protect time for uninterrupted reflection.
It weakens wherever interruption becomes constant.
The modern world has made distraction easier than ever.
That does not make depth impossible.
It simply makes it intentional.
Perhaps that is the defining difference.
For most of history, deep thinking emerged naturally because alternatives were limited.
Today, deep thinking increasingly requires conscious design.
It requires saying no to interruption.
No to constant stimulation.
No to the seductive belief that more information automatically produces greater understanding.
Because information has never been the destination.
Understanding is.
And understanding still demands exactly what it always has.
Time.
Attention.
Curiosity.
And the willingness to remain with difficult questions long after easier answers have presented themselves.
If the first industrial revolution multiplied human muscle...
And the digital revolution multiplied access to information...
Perhaps the age of artificial intelligence will ultimately reward something far older.
Not faster thinking.
Better thinking.
Because in a world where almost everyone can generate an answer in seconds...
The people capable of asking better questions, recognising deeper patterns and patiently pursuing genuine insight may become the individuals whose judgement everyone else seeks.
PART III — THE RENAISSANCE OF THE HUMAN MIND
Throughout history, every technological revolution has changed what society values.
The agricultural revolution rewarded those who could cultivate land.
The industrial revolution rewarded those who could harness machines.
The information age rewarded those who could access and distribute knowledge.
The age of artificial intelligence will almost certainly reward something different again.
Not because knowledge no longer matters.
But because knowledge is no longer difficult to obtain.
The question is no longer:
"Who knows the answer?"
Increasingly, the question becomes:
"Who can recognise whether the answer is any good?"
This represents a profound shift.
For the first time in history, millions of people will have access to tools capable of producing competent work almost instantly.
Reports.
Presentations.
Marketing plans.
Software.
Legal summaries.
Financial forecasts.
Lesson plans.
Research.
Most of it will be perfectly adequate.
Some of it will be genuinely excellent.
Average thinking is becoming increasingly abundant.
And abundance changes value.
When competence becomes widely available, originality becomes scarce.
When information becomes free, judgement becomes expensive.
This is why I suspect the coming decades will produce something rather unexpected.
Not the decline of human thinking.
Its renaissance.
Throughout this series we've explored what the modern world is quietly taking away.
Attention.
Boredom.
Presence.
Conversation.
The cognitive benefits of friction.
At first glance, that sounds pessimistic.
It isn't.
Because recognising what is disappearing also reveals what is becoming increasingly valuable.
Every capability that becomes rare becomes worth protecting.
And often, worth paying for.
Think about craftsmanship.
Mass production made everyday furniture dramatically cheaper.
Yet handmade furniture became more valuable.
Not because factory-made furniture stopped working.
Because craftsmanship became rarer.
The same pattern exists with food.
Music.
Art.
Photography.
Handwritten letters.
Anything that remains deeply human often becomes more treasured once mass production becomes possible.
Thinking may follow exactly the same path.
Imagine two consultants.
Both have access to the same artificial intelligence.
Both can generate reports in minutes.
Both produce polished presentations.
One simply accepts the machine's first answer.
The other spends hours questioning assumptions.
Exploring unintended consequences.
Testing different perspectives.
Identifying patterns nobody else noticed.
From the outside, both may appear equally productive.
From the inside, they are doing fundamentally different work.
One is generating information.
The other is creating judgement.
The second will almost certainly become far more valuable.
The same applies far beyond business.
Doctors increasingly receive AI-assisted diagnoses.
The remarkable doctor will not merely read the recommendation.
They will understand when it should be questioned.
Teachers will have unlimited educational resources.
The remarkable teacher will know which lesson a particular child actually needs.
Lawyers will receive instant legal summaries.
The remarkable lawyer will understand how those principles apply to unique human circumstances.
Parents will have access to endless advice.
The remarkable parent will know when their own child requires something different.
Artificial intelligence may improve almost every profession.
But it also makes human judgement more, not less, important.
This is because judgement cannot exist without values.
Machines optimise.
People decide what should be optimised.
Machines predict.
People determine what future they actually want.
Machines identify efficient solutions.
People decide whether efficiency is the right goal.
Those questions have never been technological.
They have always been philosophical.
And philosophy begins where certainty ends.
Perhaps that is why deep thinking has always required humility.
The deepest thinkers rarely rush towards certainty.
They recognise that reality is usually more complicated than it first appears.
They ask another question.
Read another source.
Reconsider another assumption.
Not because they enjoy indecision.
Because they understand that confidence and correctness are not the same thing.
The modern world often mistakes speed for intelligence.
History suggests something rather different.
Many of humanity's greatest thinkers were distinguished less by how quickly they reached conclusions than by how reluctant they were to settle for inadequate ones.
There is another quality that may become increasingly valuable.
Intellectual courage.
Not the courage to defend an opinion.
The courage to abandon one.
As artificial intelligence becomes more persuasive, the temptation will be to outsource certainty.
To assume that because something sounds convincing, it must therefore be true.
The people who thrive will not be those who reject technology.
Nor those who accept every answer uncritically.
They will be those who remain intellectually independent.
Who continue asking:
"How do we know?"
"What evidence supports this?"
"What might we be overlooking?"
Those questions may become some of the most valuable questions in society.
Previous generations often competed through physical strength.
Later generations competed through access to knowledge.
The next generation may compete through quality of attention.
Not because attention itself produces success.
Because attention produces everything else.
Careful observation.
Deep learning.
Sound judgement.
Original ideas.
Meaningful relationships.
Wise decisions.
Attention sits quietly beneath them all.
Protect attention, and many of the other qualities begin to flourish naturally.
Lose it, and each becomes progressively harder to sustain.
Perhaps this is the great irony of our age.
We have built technologies capable of giving humanity access to almost everything it has ever known.
Yet the limiting factor may become the very thing those technologies cannot provide.
The willingness to stop.
To think.
To question.
To reflect.
To change our minds.
To sit with complexity without demanding immediate certainty.
Those capacities have never been glamorous.
They have rarely been fast.
But they have always sat behind humanity's greatest achievements.
It is tempting to imagine that the future belongs to whoever possesses the most advanced technology.
History offers a more nuanced lesson.
Technology changes civilisation.
Human judgement determines whether that change is for the better.
The printing press spread ideas.
People decided which ideas deserved spreading.
The internet connected the world.
People chose how to use that connection.
Artificial intelligence will undoubtedly transform almost every aspect of modern life.
The defining question is unlikely to be what the machines become capable of.
It is what human beings continue choosing to become.
FINAL THOUGHT
For centuries, education has largely been about helping people find answers.
The coming century may demand something different.
Helping people ask better questions.
Because answers are becoming increasingly abundant.
Wisdom is not.
And in a world overflowing with information, the rarest people may not be those who know the most.
They may be those who still possess the patience, curiosity and courage to think deeply enough to discover what truly matters.
